Prologue: Full Moon

In the midst of the dark, cold, uncomfortably quiet night, two people stands in the cliff side of an unnamed mountain, surrounded by vast forests. They stand, as if waiting for someone.

“Moon...” The taller one spoke while the wind blows his cape, with his hood covering his face, “Aren’t you going to help them?”

Suddenly, a loud shriek from the forest broke the silence of the night, followed by other fearful screams. Earlier that day, a family of three and other people decided to camp someplace in the forest, and now, they suffer the consequence of the wrong decision they made. A pack of blood-thirst, the vampires, came and attacked them. Everyone was dead, except for the family, who are currently being chased by these vampires.

“Why should I help..?” The one called Moon spoke coldly, “Those vampires are but curse-blooded. They’re not pure, so... They’re not too dangerous for the human population.”

“Wouldn’t I be so cold if I stop them? Their craving for blood only happens one night in a month. Besides, it’s those humans fault for deciding to spend the night in an unsecured area. And of all the nights they would choose to stay, they’re at fault for choosing this one.” Moon walked closer to the tip of the cliff and looked at the sky, seeing the bright white full moon, while still hearing the screams of the three survivors.

“This night... Night of full moon... The Night of Red Moon...” As Moon stares up, his eyes reflected the Moonlight as bloody-red.  He then turned to his companion and slowly walked towards him.

“What do you mean by ‘Red Moon’? The moon is as white as usual.” His companion asks with confusion.

“No, it’s not.” Moon replied, still slowly walking to his companion. “Have you already forgotten what I told you, Winter?”

“That full moon and all those other full moons. To a human’s eyes, they’re the same as usual. But for vampires, either pure-blood or cursed-blood, it is shaded bloody-red. And these certain nights where in the red full moon shines, vampires are energized, strengthened and their crave for blood awakens.” Moon stopped walking after he passed by Winter.

“I knew that...” Winter spoke with a sigh, “But that Red moon fact slipped my mind...”

Winter looked down to the forest, “But still... If we let them go on loose like this, they might eventually find their way to the city and wipe out the whole population of that place. Many innocent people will die.”

“But if we don’t let them do what they want for at least just one night in a month, they’ll be filled with more grudge and the agreement would be broken... again!” Moon said in a bit louder voice than before.

Winter looks at Moon, “Moon, if we let them go on like this every month, the whole human population of the world will be wiped out in less than a year! As hunters, aren’t we supposed to prevent this from happening? Obviously, you’re overestimating the humans... They’re not as strong and powerful as you think... They’re not like you and I!”

“I don’t think you understand how these cursed-blood vampires feel either, Winter... You don’t understand what is it like to be thirsty to death and search aimlessly for something to ease the feeling, you don’t know how it’s like to be always considered second to humans, you will never understand how unfair the world is for them... And for that reason I’m letting them off most of the time... Even for one night, let these vampires be favoured because the humans have always had it all. Let tonight would be the vampires’ night. The humans... they can’t always have what they want, things can’t always go their way...”

Winter then bit his lip then said, “I understand that! But all I’m saying is that they should have control! That’s what the agreement said, right? ‘We hunters will act only if the cursed-blood vampires went loose and out of control.’ Isn’t this out of control for you yet?”

“No... Not at all...”Moon swiftly replies, as if he did not give a thought of Winter’s question.

Winter then reacts negatively, “Are you kidding me!? Those vampires already killed 11 people and are still currently chasing the last three..! And you’re saying it’s still not enough?”

“Of course not... How many vampires do you see in there!? Nine! Do you think one is always enough when you haven’t drank or eaten anything for a whole month!?” Moon said with a much louder voice. “Just as I thought, you really don’t understand!”

Winter then looked down with worry, “Can’t we just let these last three go? That child is too young and innocent to die.”

“That child... He’s a hunter like us... If he wants to survive, he should protect himself.” Moon said as if he doesn’t care.

“But he hasn’t awakened yet! How is he supposed to protect himself?” Winter asks while placing his palm on his head problematically.

“If you want to help, then I won’t stop you... I’m going back... then study the agreement again...” Moon walked away from Winter, “You go and rescue that kid... and make sure you be back on time...”

Moon disappeared in the dark, leaving Winter alone in the cliff. He pulled his hood down, covering his face more, and then whispered, “Well, you’re right... I don’t understand how the vampire feels... But you do, don’t you, Moonlight?”

Winter then jumped off the cliff, heading straight to the middle of the forest, looking for the last three survivors. It is unknown whether Moon and Winter are either a man or a woman; it’s very unnoticeable, even with their voices and their forms.

Meanwhile, the family are still running for their lives. The vampires are catching up on them, and, in order to protect his family, the father picked up a branch with a sharp end and he stopped running.  Noticing this, his wife and his child stopped too.

“Philip! What are you doing!? We have to go now! Come on!” His wife called him, but he did not move from his pose.

“Run now! I’ll buy you some time! Get out of this forest now! Please, just run... Ellen, Vincent! Go now!” the father pushes them away.

“But, dad..! We can’t leave you here! You’ll die! We should run together!” their son spoke while crying.

“Vincent... You’re a good boy, right..? Obey your dad, okay? Take your mother with you and run away as fast as you can! Hurry! They’re coming!”

Ellen and Vincent couldn’t do anything else but do as what Philip wants them to do. So they ran fast while they cry, and Philip went on to fight off the enemies, but immediately fails, though he successfully left one of the vampires wounded. Simultaneously as Philip was attacked, Vincent looked back and saw his father being feasted by those vampires, and then he screamed for his father and started crying more and the same goes for his mother.

Vincent and Ellen went on running while crying, and the vampires once again started chasing. It wasn’t long until one of the vampires catch up on them.  The vampire tackled Ellen and Vincent, causing Vincent to be thrown forward to the tree, while Ellen gets bitten in her neck, killing her in the process. Vincent tries to stand, with his sight being blurred. When his sight became clear, his teary and fearful eyes showed rage. He picked up a rock, and it suddenly turned to a shard sword made of stone.

Vincent attacked the vampire that killed his mother, killing it and attacking the others that comes his way too. He became out of control, injuring all except one vampire, who just looked at him, instead of attacking him. The vampires that Vincent injured stepped back and dared not attack him, but the vampire who was not injured, still walked towards him, and then he stopped when he’s right in front of Vincent, with a distance of about 3 meters.

Losing all his energy, Vincent fell to the ground, with his eyes wide opened, while breathing heavily, yet seemingly unconscious.  His eyes were blurred again, not being able to see anything other than the light emitted by the moon and the shadows made by the trees, he couldn’t even see the vampires anymore, but he could still hear them.

“Hmm... I knew it... I knew you felt different from the others. I should’ve known that you’re a hunter. Then I should’ve finished you off a while ago.” The uninjured vampire spoke with boast.

Vincent lies still on the ground and thought to himself, “Hunter..? What does that supposed to mean? It’s no point wondering... I’m going to die anyway...”

“Hey, you cowards..! Come here and take this kid out. He’s no longer harmful...” The uninjured vampire said with malice.

The other vampires walked towards Vincent and surrounded him.  Vincent was not moving, he still couldn’t see anything, but he accepted the fact that he was going to die. When the vampires were about to attack, a strange, haunting melody of a piccolo was heard in the middle of nowhere. The vampires then looked at where the sound was coming from. They stepped back and retreated in panic. Vincent little by little gains back the clarity of his eyes. Though still a little blurred, he saw a person in black cape walking towards him, and as that person walks nearer, the melody become louder.

When the person was close, he stopped playing and he knelt down, taking a look at Vincent. Without saying anything, he picked up Vincent and carried him away, while once again playing his piccolo. Vincent, due to weariness, passed out again, and as the person carries him out of the forest, he started calling out to his parents making the person, who was Winter, feel more sympathetic towards him. Then the night became quiet again, still uncomfortable, as if danger is lurking in any place. The Night of the red moon ended that time, but as long as there full moon, as long as there are vampires, the hunt will never end.

~~~
Ta-da! And the hunt goes on... XD Next scene in chapter 1 is the grown-up Vincent investigating the strange disappearances of many people. He has become a hunter like Winter and Moon, and now he has his own team, who poses as crime investigators in the morning and vampire hunters at night... So... yeah, hopefully I don't run out of ideas.. XD Because back then, when I'm writing chapter 1, I ran out of it and decided to cancel the whole thing... But then this friend of mine sneakily took my story notebook and said it was kinda nice and asks me to continue it... so... I'm doing it for her, LOL.. And I said too much... Until next time again! XD
